Anime Review #3- No Game No Life

This review looks at the currently joint 9th ranked anime, No Game No Life, however it really did deserve higher. Why? Here’s Why?

Don’t let the low positioning deceive you, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the series and will love to see any new series or the upcoming film in July. There are a multitude of high points including; The Theme Song, The complexity of the plot line which becomes revealed at the end, The cuteness of the main Female Protagonist, The slight element of love interests, The Logical Reasoning and The Brief Sections of Adult Humour/Sexuality.

However there are also a few major negatives which include; The visual sharpness (For a show released in 2014 the graphics were equal to or slightly worse than those in Pokemon, Yugioh and Dragon Ball Z in the late 90’s-Early 2000’s), The confusing blink and you’ll have no idea what is happening nature of the the deep thinking behind games (With all of the speech in Japanese, the subtitles are imperative to understanding the situation in the story when they go in to deep logical reasoning to try and win the games and if you blink or look away you find yourself constantly going back in a few minutes), The overall rushed nature of the season (Being only 12 episodes in length the story progressed so fast that there was very little opportunity to build character depth or take in the genius of some of the plays), The over perverted nature of the main male character (The majority of the series, like in Trinity Seven, is filled with scenes of a sexual nature with Sora attempting to see and touch a girl sexually at any opportunity, even in front of his eleven year old “Sister” who uses brilliant deadpan comedy to say whatever was on her mind but at times help in the perversion) and The moments of incestuous behaviour of Sora towards his little stepsister (As the lead in suggests the overly friendly approaches and questionably actions leave the viewer uncomfortable at times).

Despite these issues, I genuinely believe that a release of a second season could solve some of these problems as long as they ease off on the desperate sex scenes and concentrate on the deep thinking games. This is definitely a thinkers anime/story as each of the games shown such as live person chess rely on great strategy and/or teamwork with other characters. Similarly to Sora and Shiro (The little sister) the whole world that they find themselves in is just one big game which they are destined to win as “Blank never loses” and as such each action they take, interacting with the other characters have been parts of an undetectable plan and strategy to reach these goals.

So what happens and what am I on about whole world and massive strategy?

One night of gaming, Sora and Shiro, two hardcore gamers (Who have superhuman logical abilities) who have abandoned the outside world to play as hard as possible for as long as possible, are sent a link which seems to be from a new game for them to conquer. However it transports them to a whole new world, a new universe…one where they finally belong. The whole world is comprised of 16 Nations and Races with Humans/Imans being at the bottom, due to being the physically weakest and having no understanding of magic.

The key element of this world is that everything is decided upon by playing games. There are no physical wars, there is no killing. Just 10 Rules, most important being; No one can be killed as a result of playing the game, the challenged party decides the rules of the game, any cheating (that is provable) is grounds for immediate loss and that both parties involved in the game must beforehand agree on what the winner should get from the loser and any ambiguity could be exploited as we see early on, and these bets are enforced by the world no matter what.

After arriving in the world, the pair win some gold from a gambler at a poker tournament which they use to pay for a hotel room and multiple gaming devices. On their way to the room they come across Stephanie Dola, granddaughter of the last king, about to get cheated out of her poker match to a seemingly magic using iman (later turns out to be Elven). Later that day Dola comes to the room to challenge Sora. Sora wins and after the ambiguity of Dola’s bet is shown, Sora says that for winning, he wants her to fall in love with him. Despite fighting it she does and begrudgingly agrees to let the siblings stay at the castle which now belongs to her. Later we find that the poker match Dola lost was for the crown of the nation which is swiftly won back by Sora and Shiro, placing them as rulers. Over the next few days and weeks they sort out all of the domestic issues before declaring war on all other nations and races. They recruit Jibril, protector of the nations library, a Flugel also seen as a demon who has an extremely nymphomaniac-like nature after a game of extreme shiritori where all words said became real. The foursome eventually come across the marbeast race (Who have the ability to read minds) who they try to take all non island land from and set a date for a huge universally televised showdown. In order to face the marbeasts, they recruit the two elves who originally swindled Dola after a confusing game which barely anyone involved understood. With the bets of this game, Sora’s memories were shared with the elves and likewise to develop trust between the parties. The game then turns out to be a shooter game where you shoot people to make them fall in love with you, team to fall in love first loses…marbeasts lost, recruiting the opposition players and gaining the land. The race leader declares they want immediate revenge with the enterity of both races land mass and resources up for grabs with Sora wanting both parties to work together. This huge decision is decided by…A coin toss which Sora wins, reluctantly getting the two races in to a faction…which is then revealed to include the elves as another stipulation of the earlier mega confusing game.

This is the simplest I could describe the plot without going on forever.

Next up will be Mirai Nikki, A.K.A. Future Diaries unless there is an unexpected change in the rankings…

Anime Review #2- Trinity Seven

In at Number 10 on the latest Anime Chart we have Trinity Seven, an anime which I genuinely struggle to remember much about so this may be a short post. With 12 Episodes, an Original Video Animation and a hour long movie, Trinity Seven has one of the smallest amounts of content for any anime series I’ve seen. Even as the fourth anime I had ever watched (Excluding Pokemon/Yugioh) it is one tough to commit to memory, I couldn’t even tell you a character’s name without searching for the anime again. However there are two things that I do remember: There was a girl who introduced herself as “The Sexy Ninja Girl” and Boobs, lots and lots of Boobs.

This anime is one definitely designed to appeal to the hormonal urges of Teenage Boys rather than tell a compelling story or put across a message (This may change with a possible second season but it’s unlikely). The main point of the show is a harem of girls following around the male protagonist. Set within a typically girls only High School of Magic, male lead, Arata Kasuga enrolls in the school as his little cousin Hijiri Kasuga appears to be kidnapped and taken to a different demonic dimension in a highly confusing first half of the first episode. At the school are an elite group of seven magic users, each of which using magic which counteracts and relates to the seven deadly sins, collectively named, The Trinity Seven.

Despite the main “Plot” being the revelation of Arata as Candidate to take the title of Demon Lord with sporadic powers and the ability to steal spells and powers from other users and the group attempting to learn to trust him on the quest to go save his cousin, it all just ended up being a mess of nakedness. Arata’s main spell is powerful in defeating enemies but has the side effect of ripping the clothes off of every girl in the area, my how convenient that is. The girl are all (aside from two) easy going towards being naked around him, flirting and showing affection as they go about their daily life. The first of these two is just generally shy around males, having been brought up around girls and thinking that perverted thoughts are impure, with the second being Lilith Asami who’s sin is Lust and acts as the leader of the seven, trying to hide she is genuinely in love with Arata, with the series culminating with the two of them on a date after having to suffer seeing girls fawn over him with some claiming to be his demon wife. This demon wife,  Arin Kannazuki is possibly most memorable out of the seven for being deadpan with no shame towards Arata, saying things with very little expression or vocal tone, being emotional yet seemingly uncaring when others try to take her man away from her.

Despite all of this criticism I have given it, it is a thoroughly enjoyable watch, even with the slight degrading of women, but that’s exactly the issue, it is an enjoyable watch but not a memorable one. I hope that they do find enough source material to make a second season but I fear that if they yet again try to stretch the story too much it will be more about how many times we can get characters naked in 20 minutes rather than develop character personality or progress the story along.

Next up shall be No Game No Life unless we have a new entrant in their position…

Anime Review #1 -Introduction

Anime is seen by many as just Japanese Cartoons, but it is so much more than that. Anime is a style of art drawing upon the more commonly known word “Animation”. As opposed to Western Style Cartoons, Anime series are typically made up of storylines and plots similar to TV Dramas but using drawn characters rather than human actors, despite the voice actors still getting credits along with production teams. The majority of Anime series are aimed at 13-18 Year olds with many exhibiting sexual themes (With the Japanese age of consent being 13), other reoccuring themes are Harems (Multiple female characters falling in love with the main Male character), Transitions between Childhood and Adulthood through High School, Swordwielding/Medieval style battling, Fantasy Worlds, Video Gaming, Love and Relationships, Dark Dystopias (Massive Amounts of Killings using Demons and Spirits) and Kawaii (An effort to make the characters and plot-lines as cute as possible). Rather than just trying to entertain a young audience, the primary reason between an anime being produced and released is to increase the Japanese sales of source materials (And Merchandise) as much as possible. Source materials include; Light Novels, Web Novels, Comics and Manga Series, being the main source of income with Animes typically being present on free streaming sites. Despite many animes following the course of their source materials, with a season likely to finish at the end of one novel in a series, there is very little continuation in to a second season, leaving many questions left unanswered, forcing people to read the source materials which on the whole contain more details and character background than the shows. This is one technique to increase sales, however for the general anime fanbase it is a frustrating one with very few novels and manga being translated in to English, meaning many questions will never be answered regardless of popular demand. Furthermore, even if Westerners buy the source materials in attempt to get another series commissioned they will have little impact as the decision to create such is based upon Japanese sales alone.

Despite all of these drawbacks, I find Anime as an incredible escape from regular life, able to binge watch several episodes of the 12-24 long series’, as is common with people just sitting in front of televisions or Netflix accounts. However one thing noticable, particularly around the larger animes is the huge fan bases they create with fan art, fandoms and conventions. On top of this extra world around the TV series, there is additional content such as Movies, Video Games, Original Video Animations and thanks to editing software and the Internet we have Anime Music Videos (Songs with Anime Montages behind), Anime Cracks (Clips of Animes turned in to memes and funny content through editing) and Abridged Parody Versions of such animes. These are the basis, as well as the series themselves which I shall provide comment, judgement and reaction to as well as providing a run through of the storylines.

Here is a current ranking of all anime universes I have witnessed:

  1. Sword Art Online
  2. Chuunibyo Demo Koi Ga Shittai (Love, Chuunibyo and Other Delusions)
  3. Shigatsu Wa Kimi No Uso (Your Lie in April)
  4. Konosuba: God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World!
  5. Re: Zero- Starting Life in Another World (=5)
  6. Food Wars! : Shokugeki no Souma (=5)
  7. Akame ga Kill!
  8. Mirai Nikki (Future Diaries)
  9. Trinity Seven

Next post I shall begin with the bottom ranked series, Trinity Seven.

If I watch any new anime I shall update the leaderboard and continue to report in descending order.

Night Ramblings 5

Over a year ago, I told of what time/date I would go back to should I have the chance, linked with what my biggest regret was and what I would change about my past. However with everything that has transpired over that past year, finally understanding that what I previously thought to be love was an illusion of my own design, I have made some adjustments to the time or time(s) I would like to go back to and one of which is a strange choice.

Still based around love and relationships, the obvious and my first choice is to go back and live in a loop of last summer, 18th of May to 9th of September. I wouldn’t care that I wouldn’t physically grow old or experience the working world or all of the things that I have done and achieved over the past 7 months because I had everything that I valued most and that is all I needed. Keep that going for 76 years worth of time or however the average age of death is and I will go out a happy man.

Back before the girl who I wrote my last regrets and time travel piece about, I had only fancied two girls, being amazed by how good they looked…one of them being the girl I was able to get in a relationship with 5/6 years after first spotting. If I had tried with her back then, she would be a completely different person at this point in time, valuing relationships more, in a perfect world and should she have been a relationships person as  a result we’d have been going out for over 6 years and still going strong, becoming adults together. On top of it I wouldn’t have had the 2 years of heartache with the girl I once considered to be my first love. A six year relationship, that is something I can only dream of until the age of 40 when realistically all of my chances of that would be over.

Now the weird one. I would go back to a couple of months after my ex and I split when there were exhibited signs that she still cared and checked up, leading in to the time I spent with the December Girl. Despite all the pain I’d still go because as Skillet sing in Everything goes Black, “I’d rather hurt than not care”. If I have lost this much care and feeling in the space of 9 months, in a years time when I originally planned to attempt friendship, after University, away from all stresses, will there be anything left even if she still hasn’t dated and only gone for the occasional one night stand, not able to replace me and likewise.

A year is an incredibly long time, this date last year, that girl who became my world sent me a message with the word “Mate” in it, she called me her mate and I had a mini heart breakdown thinking I had been friendzoned yet again but 3 months later I thought we’d run the gauntlet and make it through uni…only to be changed a couple of weeks later…I thought then that the pain would last forever and that it would be the worst couple of years of my life. Instead now I’m numbing (not completely out of the woods but getting there), and went on to have so many amazing experiences in my second uni year and nearly guaranteed for that amount to continue or increase in my final year as I won’t be alone and seperate from my friends, actually living with them, as I will have a placement and working on projects of my own passion and design.

I can do this…not sure what this is but I will do it.

Night Ramblings 4

When you meet new people and are gathered around a table or a campfire or in a circle for a long period of time, the topic of relationships always come up. Whether it be finding out if everybody there has a significant other or why someone is single or what have someone’s exes been like. Currently my ex is off on summer placement for a few months, spending nights gathered round a camp fire chatting with the girls of the placement while most of the guys go off doing whatever separate thing they do. Inevitably at some point exes would have been something discussed, so what would be said about me? Would she make up that I was abusive or over controlling or something like that which would give her an easy way to say why we aren’t together any longer or would she tell the truth or how she described me in the break up message as a gentleman or someone who is kind and caring, then telling the real reason why we broke up quite civilly. Also when I message her saying happy birthday when it comes around, people will ask who that message is from and want to get involved knowing it’s from an ex. Depending on the stories told, I will either be seen as an asshole who is desperately trying to get back with her or a guy just trying to be nice and friendly to someone who he knows/cares about on her birthday. Judging that I haven’t messaged her or interacted with her in over 4 months when that time comes around, the latter should come through.

Furthermore, with the drinking game Never Have I Ever a lot is revealed, specifically sexual things when stories of past flings are shared, I must be a reason why she gets absolutely hammered because we got up to some pretty outside the box stuff.

Now it’s over 8 months since that relationship and about 5 months since the last sort of relationship I’ve begun to notice more and more things that I miss about them. And the main two that stand out beside buying a girl flowers/surprise gifts are a girls smile and a girls sarcastic voice. In a publically posted video by my ex she sarcastically said “Oh well done” to someone and it instantly took me back, not just to time with her because I had forgotten that voice but that feeling of with any jokey girl, like you do something wrong, she stands in front of you, stares you in the eyes and sarcastically/teasingly says something like “Oh well done” then you have a lustful longing kiss. And that is something which both sinks my heart thinking that my chances of doing that with arguably the most attractive person I’ll meet gone and makes my heart pound thinking that there could be someone else out there who with a less seductive voice and face.

I am struggling being back here seeing all the facebook memories of a year ago, just hope I make it through without fully breaking down.
